Kokoda Gear List:

  • Boots with proper ankle support and fully broken-in (worn in)
  • Socks - not cotton
  • Warm thermal shirt
  • Warm pants
  • Wind or Waterproof Jacket
  • 2 pair comfortable shorts
  • 1 light long sleeve shirt
  • 2-3 short sleeve shirts
  • Gaiters/ankle covers (optional)
  • Personal medical kit (day to day bandages, med's, sport tape, muscle creams etc)
  • Brimmed hat for sun and rain
  • Strong water bottle/s (2 x 1Litre)
  • Underwear
  • Long underwear or pajamas (don't sleep in your trekking gear!!)
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellant
  • Anti-malarial drugs (Doxycyclene, Malarone, Larium)
  • Personal effects i.e. deodorant, soap/shampoo, shaving needs (though most don't worry about shaving), toothbrush and paste, etc.
  • Writing note book and pens
  • Lollies (a blessing sometimes)
  • Sleeping bag ; one as low as -3 or 0 is best but +5 is okay too if you have layers of clothing you can put on.
  • Comfortable light sleeping pad; note: foam is okay but when you have aching muscles after 10 hours hiking, a self inflating mat is wonderful
  • Rain cover for pack- optional, I tend to just waterproof everything inside my backpack and forget about the pack itself
  • Toilet Paper- 2 rolls is more than enough put in separate zip-lock bags

EXTRA's that are useful:

  • Large Ziplock bags- excellent to house smelly clothing until next wash spot, passports, journal, or pack all your clothing in individual ziplock bags for waterproofing and maintaining things that are clean.
  • Small length of thin rope for your own makeshift clothing line at camp...very useful as space is at a premium
  • Sport drink powder and Gastrolyte help with muscle recovery at camp and during the hiking, very helpful to some
  • Quick dry towel - great for drying quickly after having your evening bath and very lightweight
  • Camp pillow- everyone is different and it can make the difference for some people between an aching neck or not; some people just use a jumper scrunched up (but if the jumper is soaking wet from being worn in the rain, or smelly it doesn't make a very nice pillow)
  • Spare set of boot laces
